Keeping with tradition, I bought myself a new toy for Christmas. I'm the proud daddy of a bouncing baby XTM exterminator 2. I'm in the process of breaking in the engine and considering I'm not even using the engine toit's true potential- I'm already having a blast! I can't wait to get involved with ya'lls club and the track. Anyways, I need some advice...
1.) To what extent will buying an engine temperature guage benefit me since I'm so new to the hobby and not competing (yet)
2.) Is a fuel filter necessary?
3.) Can you recommend a good air filter oil, after-run oil, nitro car cleaner?

If you go to the track you will see even the Pro drives have a temperature gun. It is a good tool to make sure you are not running to hot or cold. You do not tune to any certain temperature but tune for performance then check it. Most fuel tanks have a fuel filter in them but I like to run an external fuel filters as well as the one in the tank. When you are racing and pitting you have a good chance to get dirt in the tank, which the filter in the tanks should stop it from going any farther but to be on the safe side I run an external filter as well. All so gives you a little more fuel volume. You can use denatured alcohol as a cleaner. You can use good motorcycle foam filter oil. These are the items I run among others. www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXVH20&P=MLwww3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXL391&P=MLwww3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXWC47&P=ML

There are two schools of thought, on temp guns. The guys that go by temp as aboulute and those who use for reference. The guys that go for temp, believe there is an absolute temp for every engine. I got caught up in that for a while, but was never satisfied with the performance. The other theory goes by so long as its got good smoke and good performance, you are good and temps are just for reference of conditions. I now go by the latter route. I am not saying which way you need to go, i am just showing you both waysI hope this helps, but so long as its not bogging(lean or rich) and got good smoke trail, you should be good

As I stated above you do not tune to temperature but tune for performance then check temperature to make sure you are in an acceptable range. Those that have run some fair size races know that 99% of all racers keep and eye on the temperature. Now as far as smoke goes different fuels will produce different amounts of smoke and is why a temperature gun is a good tool to have.

On that motor you want the temp to stay around 180-220 during the first 8 tanks. It's best to keep the temp around 180-190 during your initial 2 tanks. Remember to always make sure your piston is BDC (bottom dead center) when your motor is not running. As far as air filter oil is concerned go to Capital Cycle and get a spray can of PJ1 red and it will last forever. Like Jeff said fuel filters are just an extra safety device for your motor. Simple Green will do a good job cleaning your ride.
most fuels have enough oil so you do not need after run oil.
Come on down when you get a chance. There are many people at the track with plenty of advice and everyone enjoys helping out.
